Prof. Katja Kanzler is a Professor and Chair of American Literature at the University of Leipzig. Previously affiliated with Universität Konstanz and TU Dresden, she rejoined American Studies Leipzig in 2018, where she completed her doctoral and postdoctoral work. Her research examines how literature and popular culture reflect societal struggles over identity and power, focusing on gender, narrativity, and the boundaries of 'literature.' She leads projects on invectivity in media and dynamics of enfreakment in US popular culture.
Teaching includes US literature surveys and transmedia popular culture courses, emphasizing critical analysis across genres and historical periods. Her grants include the Dresden-based Collaborative Research Center 'Invectivity' and current leadership as PI on enfreakment studies. Outreach efforts highlight public academia engagement, such as panel discussions on Star Trek's politics and media literacy workshops. She serves on editorial boards for Zeitschrift für Anglistik und Amerikanistik and the German-American Institute Saxony.
