Katja Heubel is a Head of the Coastal Ecology research group at the Research and Technology Centre (FTZ) affiliated with the Christian-Albrechts-University of Kiel. She holds an Associate Professor rank with a venia legendi in Zoology. Her research focuses on eco-evolutionary links, sexual selection, and behavioral adaptations in aquatic systems, particularly in coastal environments.
Education:
- Umhabilitation (Priv. Doz.) in Zoology, University of Cologne (2019)
- Doctorate (Dr. rer. nat.) in Population Ecology, University of Hamburg (2004)
- Diplom (MSc equivalent) in Biology, University of Kiel (1999)
Research Interests: Integrates experimental and theoretical approaches to study evolutionary ecology, including sexual selection dynamics, life-history trade-offs, and biodiversity maintenance in changing environments. Specializes in the ecological and evolutionary implications of sexual-asexual coexistence in aquatic species like the Amazon molly.
Teaching & Supervision:
- Supervised 1 Postdoc, 2 PhD students, 13 MSc students, and 14 BSc students
- Teaching spans Ecology, Evolutionary Biology, and Biostatistics across BSc, MSc, and PhD levels
Awards:
- DAAD Research Fellowship (University of Texas, Austin)
- University of Helsinki Docent Title
- Volkswagen Stiftung-funded Junior Research Group Leader
Labs & Projects: Leads the Coastal Ecology group within ECOLAB, focusing on ecological and evolutionary processes in coastal systems. Active in projects on fish behavior, sexual selection, and climate adaptation.
