Dr Katie Toms is a Senior Lecturer and Programme Leader for Media Communications & Culture at the School of Arts, University of the West of England (UWE Bristol). She has over five years of academic experience teaching at six leading institutions, including UWE, City University, and Goldsmiths College, across journalism, public relations (PR), publishing, and linguistics programs.
- Expertise in feminist media studies, post-feminist neoliberal culture, and media regulation.
- Focus on online misogyny, feminist activism, and conflicts around gender representation in media.
- Industry experience includes 10 years as an arts journalist and PR professional at national organizations like the Observer Review and Southbank Centre.
Her research explores the intersection of feminist resurgence and digital culture, analyzing case studies such as Caroline Criado-Perez, Diane Abbott, and Mary Beard. She investigates tensions between Article 10 (Freedom of Expression) and Article 14 (Prohibition of Discrimination) in media regulation.
Recent publications include book chapters on journalism ethics, gender, and media, featured in The Routledge Companion to Journalism Ethics and The International Encyclopedia of Gender, Media, and Communication.
