Dr. Katie Spencer is a Research Fellow at the Durrell Institute of Conservation and Ecology (DICE) within the University of Kent. Her work focuses on conservation science, particularly biodiversity trends and human-environmental interactions in Indonesia. She holds a PhD from DICE, where her research examined the impacts of landscape changes on terrestrial mammals in Borneo using camera-trap data and remote-sensing technologies. Currently, her postdoctoral research integrates social science methodologies to explore wild meat consumption and hunting practices in Indonesian Borneo, aiming to address both ecological and human dimensions of conservation.
Dr. Spencer is actively involved in the broader DICE community, contributing to events such as BioBlitz and organizing the annual DICE Twitter conference. She is a member of the Women in Conservation Canterbury Network (WCCN). Her research interests span large mammal ecology, tropical ecology, and sustainable wild meat management.
Her recent publications highlight interdisciplinary approaches to conservation challenges, including the impacts of fire on tropical peat forests, large-scale infrastructure threats to biodiversity, and innovative solutions like livestock guarding dogs for human-carnivore coexistence. While no scientific awards are explicitly mentioned, her contributions to high-impact conservation research are evident through her peer-reviewed publications.
