Professor Katie Slocombe is a leading academic in comparative and developmental psychology at the University of York, specializing in communication and social cognition across species. She holds a BSc from the University of Nottingham and a PhD from the University of St Andrews, followed by post-doctoral work in evolutionary psychology. Her current roles include Careers and Employability Coordinator, Outreach Coordinator, and membership in the University Academic Promotions Committee. Slocombe's research explores cross-species and cross-cultural variations in communication, focusing on primates and domesticated animals like dogs. Notably, she leads projects on chimpanzee vocal behavior, dog-human interactions, and infant communication development in Uganda and the UK. She has secured significant grants, including an ERC Consolidator Award (€1.98M), and collaborates with global institutions. Her work bridges evolutionary and developmental origins of social cognition, emphasizing fieldwork and longitudinal studies. Recent projects include studies on joint attention in primates and macaques, and vocal flexibility in dogs.
