Dr. Kirsty Graham is an Assistant Professor of Psychology at Hunter College, CUNY, within the School of Arts and Sciences. Her research focuses on animal communication systems, particularly primate gestures and the evolutionary origins of language. She employs comparative approaches to study nonhuman primates including bonobos, chimpanzees, and Sulawesi crested macaques, analyzing how body movements and postures convey meaning.
Dr. Graham holds a Ph.D. from the University of St. Andrews. Her work bridges ethology and cognitive science, with notable contributions to understanding human perception of nonhuman communication through experimental paradigms. Current research interests include body posture's role in animal signaling and expanding studies to more distantly related species.
Her publications explore gesture semantics, socio-ecological influences on communication, and methodological innovations in observing primate behavior. She has published in high-impact journals like PLOS Biology and Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society B.
