Katie Ryan is a Senior Lecturer in Pharmaceutics at the School of Pharmacy, University College Cork (UCC). She holds a BSc in Pharmacy from Trinity College Dublin (TCD) and a PhD in Pharmaceutics (TCD), with postgraduate qualifications in Quality Improvement (TCD) and Teaching & Learning (UCC). She is a member of the UK & Ireland Controlled Release Society, serving as its President (2017-2020).

Research Focus: Her work centers on biomaterial-driven drug delivery systems for ocular, orthopedic, and bone regeneration applications. Key areas include:
- Sustained drug release via PLGA and hydroxyapatite scaffolds
- S1P receptor modulation in bone and retinal regeneration
- Combination therapies for implant-associated infections
- Bioengineered models for drug screening in metastatic cancers
Grants & Funding: PI/co-PI of projects totaling >€1.2M from SFI, Enterprise Ireland, and industry collaborations. Active in the SFI-funded SSPC Centre.

Teaching & Outreach: Develops critical thinking curricula for pharmacy students. Leads STEM engagement initiatives in Cork schools, including Visual Thinking Strategies workshops. Chairs UCC's School of Pharmacy Staff-Student Committee.
Labs & Collaborations: Collaborates with Harvard University (Prof. David Mooney) and Tyndall National Institute (Prof. Martyn Pemble). Active in the COST Action IMPROVE network and serves on editorial boards for Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences.
