معرفی
Dr Katie Mortlock is a Senior Lecturer on the Teaching and Scholarship pathway at Cardiff University's School of Optometry and Vision Sciences, where she serves as Academic Lead for Student Voice and Year 2 Lead. With over two decades of experience at the institution, she has progressed from Clinical Demonstrator (1996-1999) to her current part-time Senior Lecturer position (2024 onwards), maintaining continuous academic engagement since completing her undergraduate studies.
Her educational foundation includes:
- PhD in Optometry and Vision Sciences (Cardiff University, 2001)
- BSc (Hons) in Optometry and Vision Sciences (Cardiff University, 1995)
- Registration with the General Optical Council (1996)
- Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (2016)
Mortlock's expertise centers on clinical investigation of posterior segment eye diseases, particularly diabetic retinopathy and glaucoma. She has extensive experience with visual electrophysiology techniques including photopic negative response and S-cone electroretinogram (ERG), as well as structural analysis using optical coherence tomography (OCT). Her research bridges clinical practice with scientific investigation to understand retinal function and optic nerve changes in ocular disease.
Analysis of her publication record reveals consistent scholarly activity from 2001-2022, with recent work focusing on advanced OCT imaging for glaucoma diagnostics and progression monitoring. Her research demonstrates evolution from fundamental electrophysiological investigations to sophisticated structural imaging applications, particularly using 1050nm wavelength OCT for deeper tissue penetration in optic nerve head analysis.
Her professional recognition includes:
- Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (2016)
As an educator, Mortlock co-developed the Preliminary Year program in 2013 and currently leads two second-year modules. She regularly supervises undergraduate and postgraduate projects and has held leadership positions including joint Year Lead (2013-2017) and Year 2 Lead (since 2022). Her additional roles include Personal Tutor, Learning Central Domain Administrator, and membership on the UG Teaching Management team.
Mortlock has collaborated with Cardiff's Optic Nerve Head Research Group, working with Dr Julie Albon, Prof Rachel North, and Prof James Morgan. Her OCT-based research has provided valuable insights into lamina cribrosa structure in glaucoma patients, contributing to understanding disease mechanisms and progression.
