Dr Katie Garner is a Senior Lecturer in the School of English at the University of St Andrews, specializing in 19th-century literature with expertise in women's writing, myth, folklore, and Gothic studies. She holds a PhD from Cardiff University and was a postdoctoral fellow at University College Cork before joining St Andrews in 2014.
Her research focuses on Romantic-era women writers and Arthurian legend, exploring censorship, translation, and access to knowledge. Her current project, funded by the Carnegie Trust and Royal Society of Scotland, examines women’s maritime writing and its intersection with scientific developments. She is a General Editor for Forum for Modern Language Studies and Book Reviews Editor for Romanticism.
Her publications include Romantic Women Writers and Arthurian Legend: The Quest for Knowledge (2017) and numerous articles on Arthuriana, Tennyson’s Idylls of the King, and coastal folklore. She supervises PhD students in her research areas and actively engages in interdisciplinary projects linking literature with science and cultural history.
Dr Garner has held external roles such as External Examiner at Edge Hill University and has presented research at international conferences, including talks on Jane Austen’s maritime themes and Wordsworth’s sea-nymphs. Her work contributes to sustainable cultural heritage through exploring historical narratives and environmental themes.
