Associate Professor of English and Director of Graduate Studies in the Department of English at Carnegie Mellon University's Dietrich College of Humanities and Social Sciences, specializing in the dialectical relationship between mass media institutions and socio-political formations.
Her research integrates critical theory, historical materialism, and labor history with analyses of film, television, radio, and digital culture. Key publications include Radio-Active: Advertising and Activism 1935-1947 (University of California Press, 2004) examining advertising's role in social movements, and the forthcoming Backstory: Film, Television and Social Class in the 1950s (Rutgers University Press) analyzing eight mid-century films like On the Waterfront and Marty through class struggle frameworks. Additional scholarly work covers Civil War medical photography, graduate student representation in popular culture, 1950s Southern black radio stations, and academic labor conditions.
As Director of Graduate Studies, she oversees academic programs while contributing public scholarship through regular blogging for Working Class Perspectives. During 2017-2018, she curated CMU Humanities Center events exploring capitalism's cultural dimensions in commemoration of Karl Marx's 200th birthday, featuring lectures, performances, and art installations.
