Dr. Kathy Lou Schultz is a Professor in the Department of English at the University of Memphis. She holds a B.A. from Oberlin College (1990), an M.F.A. from San Francisco State University (1996), and a Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania (2006). Her research focuses on African American and Afro-Diasporic literature, multi-ethnic American literature, poetry and poetics, modernism, critical theory, gender studies, and the epic. She explores intersections between literary and national histories, emphasizing poetry’s role in societal contexts.
Her notable works include The Afro-Modernist Epic and Literary History: Tolson, Hughes, Baraka (2012) and Introduction to Claudie Rankine (2023). She has presented lectures at institutions like Saint Louis University and engaged with contemporary poets such as Askia Touré and Claudia Rankine. Her poetry collections include Biting Midge (2008) and Some Vague Wife (2002). Schultz has also contributed to platforms like Jacket2 and PennSound, showcasing her interdisciplinary engagement with modernist and contemporary poetry.
