Kathryn Spence

Kathryn Spence is Director of the Peter Sammartino School of Education and Professor of Education at Fairleigh Dickinson University. A former 7-12 English teacher and coach in rural, suburban, and urban schools, she now leads teacher-preparation programs and teaches graduate courses on urban education, reading instruction, and anti-bias practice.

Her scholarship documents innovative, equitable practices in K-12 schools and informs the design of professional development that supports retention and culturally responsive teaching. She models best practices in her own university classrooms so that future teachers can replicate inclusive, evidence-based instruction.

Current research interests center on teacher induction, attrition and retention, anti-racist pedagogy, and systemic school change through collaborative action research.
