Kathryn Morgan

Kathryn (Katy) Morgan serves as an Assistant Professor of Psychology at Sewanee: The University of the South, where she began teaching in 2022.

She earned her B.A. in English and Education from Millsaps College, followed by an M.Ed. in Community Development and Action from Vanderbilt University, and completed her Ph.D. in Community Research and Action, also from Vanderbilt University.

Professor Morgan specializes in civic and sociopolitical identity development among young people engaged in social change efforts. Her community-based research focuses on understanding, promoting, and sustaining empowering community contexts where youth can participate in building collective power and promoting community wellbeing. She partners with schools and youth-serving organizations to explore experiential approaches to civic learning and development, with the goal of improving youth outcomes through evidence-based interventions. Additionally, she facilitates youth participatory action research collectives and investigates the developmental roots of civic and sociopolitical identity among organizers, activists, and community leaders.

Professor Morgan actively welcomes collaborations with students interested in action-oriented research, providing mentorship opportunities for those passionate about community engagement and social change.
