Kathryn McDonald is a Senior Lecturer and Principal Academic in Audio Production at Bournemouth University's Media Production department within the Faculty of Media & Communications. She serves as Work Load Lead for the Office of the Vice Chancellor and Staff Wellbeing Lead for her faculty. Her research focuses on participatory media, media history, prison radio, and suicide discourse in digital spaces. She co-edited The Bloomsbury Handbook of Radio (2023) and has published work on BBC radio history and mental health in media.
Education: PhD in Broadcasting History (Bournemouth University, 2015), PGCE in Education Practice (2015), MA Radio Production (2006), BA Journalism/Film/Sociology (Cardiff University, 2005).
Research interests include media ethics, sustainability in production, and the intersection of radio with social justice. She has supervised multiple PhD students and led the BA Radio Programme. Awards include the Guy Starkey Prize (2019) and Fellowship from the Higher Education Academy (2015).
Grants include the Bournemouth University IMPACT Fund for 'Exploring Motherhood through Prison Radio' (2019). She actively participates in academic networks like the Centre for Emotions and Social Justice (CESJ) and the Media History Group.
