Kathryn J. Strom is an Associate Professor in the Department of Educational Leadership at California State University, East Bay (CSUEB), and Director of the Center for Research on Equity and Collaborative Engagement. Her work focuses on critical complexity theories applied to teacher learning, multilingual youth education, and fostering difference-affirmative pedagogical practices. She co-founded the Posthuman Research Nexus, a global network supporting scholars in posthuman and complexity perspectives.
Dr. Strom has led significant scholarly initiatives, including a double special issue on non-linear teacher development in Professional Development in Education, and co-authored influential texts such as Becoming-Teacher and Decentering the Researcher. She has served as senior research personnel in federally-funded projects like the International Consortium of Multilingual Excellence in Education (ICMEE) and advises the Smithsonian Institute’s Network for Emergent Socio-Scientific Thinking (NESST).
Her research emphasizes relational praxis and critiques of academic gatekeeping, particularly through her book Scaffolding the Language of Power, which reimagines doctoral writing as a tool for social justice. Professional activities include mentoring through the Posthuman Research Nexus and contributing to grant-funded initiatives advancing STEM education for multilingual learners.
