معرفی
Kathryn Hughes Barry is an Assistant Professor at the University of Maryland School of Medicine within the Department of Epidemiology & Public Health. She earned her PhD in Cancer Epidemiology (2011) and MPH in Chronic Disease Epidemiology (2005) from Yale University, and a BS in Biology and Community Health (2003) from Tufts University.
Research Focus: Dr. Barry investigates the complex interplay between genetic, epigenetic, and environmental factors in cancer development, particularly prostate cancer. Her work emphasizes identifying biomarkers to distinguish aggressive from indolent disease, gene-environment interactions, and cancer disparities. She has conducted extensive studies on pesticide exposure, DNA methylation, and occupational risk factors.
- Key methodologies: Population-based studies, molecular epidemiology, epigenetic analysis.
- Current goals: Expand biomarker research to other cancers, study prognostic markers, and address disparities in cancer outcomes.
Scientific Awards:
- 2012 NIH Fellows Award for Research Excellence
- 2013 NCI Director’s Innovation Award
- 2014 AACR Scholar-in-Training Award
Notable Publications: Her 15 most recent articles span topics including pesticide-gene interactions in prostate cancer, DNA methylation as a biomarker, PFAS exposure and aggressive disease, and social determinants of cancer outcomes. Common subfields include gene-environment interactions, epigenetic markers, cancer disparities, and occupational risk factors.
Collaborations: Active affiliations with the University of Maryland Greenebaum Comprehensive Cancer Center and the Agricultural Health Study. Member of the Council of State and Territorial Epidemiologists (2005-present), Society for Epidemiologic Research (2007-present), and American Association for Cancer Research (2009-present).
