Dr. Kathryn Fredricks is a Lecturer and Researcher at the School of Geography and Sustainable Development, University of St Andrews. Her work focuses on antibiotic resistance dynamics in East Africa, particularly examining the interplay between socioeconomic factors, environmental conditions, and healthcare practices. She leads multidisciplinary projects involving consortia like HATUA and CARE, addressing issues such as UTI antibiotic resistance, healthcare-seeking behaviors, and poverty-driven antibiotic misuse.
Her research combines epidemiological analysis with qualitative studies on patient and provider behaviors. Key contributions include studies on antibiotic provision practices in Tanzanian drug outlets, pandemic impacts on resistance patterns, and the role of multidimensional poverty in self-medication. Fredricks collaborates with institutions in Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda, emphasizing One Health approaches to combat antimicrobial resistance.
Her publications highlight trends in antibiotic resistance beyond pharmaceutical use, emphasizing environmental and socioeconomic drivers. Collaborative grants focus on unraveling patient pathways and healthcare system challenges in East Africa. Fredricks is part of teams investigating UTI treatment behaviors and the intersection of clinical, social, and environmental determinants of health.
