Kathryn Brewster is a Research Fellow and Lecturer I in Digital Studies at the University of Michigan School of Information, located on the ancestral lands of the Anishinaabeg people. She collaborates with Dr. Oliver Haimson to develop technologies serving marginalized communities, focusing on LGBTQ+ digital histories and HIV/AIDS archives. Her research examines how internet memories are preserved, particularly through 1980s-90s LGBTQ+ BBS networks, and explores content moderation practices during the HIV/AIDS crisis. Brewster holds a PhD from UC Irvine (2023) and has published widely on queer digital histories, AR technologies for trans communities, and BBS archives. She received the 2024 Internet Histories Early Career Researcher Award for her work. Brewster teaches courses on digital culture, internet history, and technology’s societal impacts, emphasizing critical thinking and inclusive design. Her book project Surviving Online traces HIV/AIDS communities’ use of early computing to foster resilience and advocates for equitable tech futures.
