Kathryn Bell is a Professor in the Department of Psychology at Acadia University. She specializes in clinical psychology with a focus on interpersonal violence, trauma-related disorders, and addiction. Her research explores risk factors for intimate partner violence (IPV), sexual assault, and childhood abuse, emphasizing contextual frameworks linking trauma, emotion regulation, and substance use. She has held a postdoctoral fellowship at Brown University’s Warren Alpert Medical School and completed clinical training with the Boston Consortium. Currently on sabbatical until June 2024, she暂停招收研究生和荣誉学生 for the 2023-2024 academic year.
Dr. Bell holds a B.A. from Capital University, an M.A. and Ph.D. from Western Michigan University, and an APA-accredited clinical internship. Her work integrates behavioral therapies like Prolonged Exposure (PE) and Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) for PTSD, as well as Mindfulness-Based Approaches and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). She maintains affiliations with the Nova Scotia Board of Examiners in Psychology and the Canadian Psychological Association.
Her research has examined pandemic impacts on relational well-being, verbal arguments preceding dating violence, and the interplay of substance use with aggression. Recent publications address uncertainty intolerance in IPV during the pandemic and qualitative analyses of dating violence consequences. She advocates for ethical research practices in sensitive topics and emphasizes contextual approaches to violence prevention.
Dr. Bell’s lab (Horton Hall 412/414) welcomes students and volunteers. Her work has been published in journals like Journal of Social & Personal Relationships and Violence and Victims, with a strong focus on translating research into clinical practice and public health policy.
