Kathryn A. Perrine is an Associate Professor of Chemistry and Affiliated Associate Professor of Materials Science and Engineering at Michigan Technological University. Her research group focuses on understanding reactions and processes at surfaces and interfaces, leveraging surface science techniques such as vibrational spectroscopy, electron spectroscopies, and atomic force microscopy. Key areas include corrosion mechanisms, heterogeneous catalysis, and designing nanostructured materials for energy and environmental applications.
Dr. Perrine holds a PhD from the University of Delaware and a BS from the University of South Carolina. She has received prestigious funding including the National Science Foundation’s Major Research Instrumentation grant (2017) and the 2023 Bhakta Rath Research Award for pioneering methods in interfacial surface chemistry analysis.
Her teaching includes courses like Surface and Interface Science (CH5665/MSE5665) and Physical Chemistry laboratory modules. The Perrine Group actively mentors undergraduate and graduate students across chemistry, materials science, and engineering disciplines.
Current research explores mechanisms of water disinfectants on iron interfaces, CO2 capture via mineralization, and corrosion processes under ambient conditions. Collaborative projects involve institutions like the California Institute of Technology and University of California, Irvine.
