Kathleen Subramoney

Kathleen Subramoney is a Lecturer in the Department of Virology at the University of the Witwatersrand. She holds a BSc (Microbiology), BSc Honours, and MSc from the University of KwaZulu-Natal. Her research focuses on viral epidemiology with particular emphasis on respiratory pathogens and SARS-CoV-2 evolution in South Africa. She has contributed to studies on influenza, Hepatitis A, and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), with a focus on pediatric populations and hospital-associated infections.

Her work spans molecular diagnostics, genomic surveillance of viral pathogens, and understanding viral diversity at intra-host levels. Notable contributions include analysis of SARS-CoV-2 lineage dynamics during pandemic waves, detection of the Omicron variant, and early genome sequencing of the virus. Her research emphasizes public health implications of viral outbreaks and co-infections.
