Kathleen Ryor serves as the Tanaka Memorial Professor of International Understanding and Art History within the Department of Art and Art History at Carleton College, where she has been a faculty member since 1996. Her institutional affiliation spans over two decades of dedicated service to art historical scholarship and pedagogy.
Her educational foundation includes a BA from the University of Virginia-Main Campus and advanced degrees (MA and PhD) from the Institute of Fine Arts. This academic trajectory established her expertise in global art traditions with particular emphasis on East Asian contexts.
Professor Ryor's research focuses on the intersection of cultural practice and visual expression in China and Japan, evidenced by her current Fall 2025 courses: Chinese Art and Culture (ARTH 166) and Arts of the Japanese Tea Ceremony (ARTH 266). These offerings highlight her specialization in ritual-based artistic systems and cross-cultural aesthetic philosophies within East Asian societies.
She maintains active academic engagement from her office in Boliou Hall 157, with contact available via email (kryor@carleton.edu) or phone (507-222-5590), supporting student collaboration and scholarly discourse in art historical studies.
