Kathleen Nicoll is a Professor at the University of Utah’s School of Environment, Society & Sustainability. She holds academic positions including Adjunct Assistant Professor (Geology & Geophysics, 2008–2015) and Associate Professor (Geography, 2013–2021). Her expertise spans Geology, Archaeology, and Environmental Management, with a focus on geoarchaeology, Quaternary studies, and human-environment interactions. She has conducted fieldwork across arid regions, including Egypt, Turkey, and Utah.
Education: BA (Geology & Environmental Science, University of Pennsylvania), MA (Geology, Bryn Mawr College), PhD (Geosciences, University of Arizona). Languages: Italian, French, Arabic, Turkish.
Research interests include geomorphology of deserts, paleoenvironmental reconstruction, and the Anthropocene. Notable projects: plastic pollution’s impact on sedimentary systems, sand mining effects in NW Turkey, and geoarchaeological studies of ancient civilizations. She has led grants like the NASA-funded 'From Red Rocks to Red Planet' and 'Digging Up Past Herstories.'
Awards include the Seymour Gitin Distinguished Professorship (2024), Ripp Rapp Career Award (2019), and multiple Fulbright Global Scholars Awards. She chairs committees for the Geological Society of America and the International Quaternary Association.
Teaching includes courses on arid lands, geomorphology, and environmental systems. Outreach via the 'Geomorphology Rules' Facebook page reaches millions globally, promoting science communication. She also advocates for Great Salt Lake conservation through Friends of the Great Salt Lake.
