Prof. Dr. Kathleen Clark is an Associate Professor of Mathematics Education at Florida State University. She maintains an active research collaboration with Prof. Dr. Ingo Witzke at the University of Siegen, involving six research visits to Siegen since 2014. Their joint work addresses the critical transition challenges mathematics students face when moving from school (concrete methods) to university (abstract formalisms), which contributes to high drop-out rates globally.
Clark's research integrates:
- Analysis of pedagogical discontinuities between educational levels
- Development of seminars using historical sources to contextualize 'abstraction shock'
- Intervention strategies co-designed with student feedback
- Qualitative methodologies to enhance mathematics education frameworks
She has served as an expert reader for graduate theses at Siegen, enriching doctoral supervision with international perspectives. Clark highlights Siegen's collaborative environment—where Mathematics Education resides within the Mathematics Department—as uniquely conducive to interdisciplinary innovation.
