Katherine Tierney is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Sociology at Western Michigan University. Her work focuses on social demography, fertility, and health inequalities, particularly examining how structural factors influence reproductive health outcomes and access to assisted reproductive technologies (ART). She holds a PhD in Sociology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, an M.A. in Sociology from the same institution, and a B.A. in Psychology and Women's and Gender Studies from Wellesley College.
Her research combines quantitative and qualitative methods to investigate disparities in ART access, fertility-related health issues, and the sociocultural dimensions of reproduction. Current projects address inequalities in reproductive health technologies, including the impact of socioeconomic status, race/ethnicity, and geographic location on fertility care. She has published in journals such as Fertility and Sterility and Population Research and Policy Review.
Katherine teaches courses on introductory sociology, family demography, and the sociology of health. Her teaching philosophy emphasizes critical engagement with sociological concepts and awareness of systemic inequalities. She is affiliated with the Kercher Center for Social Research at Western Michigan University, contributing to interdisciplinary projects on social change and human welfare.
