Katherine Thorington is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Biology at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke. Her research integrates ornithology, mammalogy, and behavioral ecology with focus on social behaviors in flying squirrels, avian community ecology, and conservation in fragmented habitats.
Key research areas include: kinship dynamics in southern flying squirrel winter aggregations (Glaucomys volans), breeding bird communities in suburban habitat islands, and predation ecology in anthropogenic landscapes. Her work employs field observation, genetic analysis, and ecological modeling to understand animal behavior and conservation challenges.
Recent educational scholarship (2022) develops pedagogical strategies for building critical thinking skills in first-year biology students. Earlier publications (2010-2014) document extensive field research on flying squirrel sociality and avian diversity in urban ecosystems.
Teaching responsibilities include courses in biology with emphasis on ecology, animal behavior, and conservation. Office hours indicate active student engagement and academic advising at UNCP.
