Katherine Sugar is a Research Fellow and Research Associate at the University of Manchester's Department of Geography, affiliated with the Energy Demand Research Centre (EDRC). Her work focuses on urban low-carbon and inclusive transitions, exploring how places can become sustainable and equitable through governance models, energy efficiency schemes, and addressing barriers in decarbonization. Prior to joining Manchester in 2024, she held research positions at the University of Oxford's Environmental Change Institute and the University of Edinburgh's School of Geosciences.
Education: PhD in Geography (University of Glasgow, 2021), MSc in Ecological Economics (University of Edinburgh, 2016), and MA in Geography with Polish (University of Glasgow, 2013). Her research contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goals related to sustainable cities and communities, climate action, and industry innovation.
Key research themes include governance of SMEs for net zero, energy-efficient procurement, and the Energy Efficient Scotland program. She has published widely on topics such as home energy advice landscapes, local authority engagement strategies, and municipal ownership models for decarbonization.
Her articles analyze barriers and opportunities in energy transitions, emphasizing workforce planning for clean energy and innovative finance models like Bristol City Leap. Collaborations include projects with the UK Energy Research Centre and Scottish Government.
