Katherine Sinacore is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Integrated Science and Technology within James Madison University's College of Integrated Science & Engineering. Her research integrates ecological, climatic, and socioeconomic dimensions to develop evidence-based forest restoration strategies across tropical and temperate ecosystems.
Her academic credentials include:
- Ph.D. in Environmental Science, University of New Hampshire (2018)
- M.S. in Environmental Science, University of New Hampshire (2013)
- B.S. in Environmental Science, Wake Forest University (2011)
Professor Sinacore investigates how biophysical interactions, climate variability, and financial incentives jointly influence restoration outcomes. Her work develops scalable models to enhance ecosystem services (carbon sequestration, watershed protection) while meeting community needs, with emphasis on creating economically viable pathways for landholders through carbon payment mechanisms.
Current projects include native species enrichment planting with Panama's Ngäbe-Buglé community, the Water Guardians student-led stream health initiative, and the Agua Salud Project demonstrating that modest carbon payments (US$130/ha/yr) transform tropical forest restoration economics. Her research receives grant support from environmental science funding bodies and involves international collaborators.
Professor Sinacore leads field research teams in Panama and Virginia, conducting ecological monitoring and socioeconomic surveys. Her interdisciplinary approach trains students in forest restoration science while advancing community-engaged solutions for sustainable landscapes.
