She holds a PhD in Biological Sciences from Carnegie-Mellon University and a BS in Biochemistry from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. Her research explores genre flexibility, interdisciplinary writing challenges, and visualizing scholarly communities.
Recipient of the 2019 Goergen Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching, Schaefer has taught courses such as ‘Disease and Society’ and ‘Writing in Ecology and Evolution.’ She coordinates writing programs, designs interdisciplinary writing assignments, and advises on academic integrity and online education. Her service roles include leadership in faculty development, conflict resolution, and initiatives like CIRTL (Center for the Integration of Research, Teaching, and Learning).
