Katherine Moore

Katherine M. Moore is a Professor of Anthropology and Undergraduate Chair at the University of Pennsylvania's School of Arts and Sciences. She also serves as the Interim Coordinator of the Native American and Indigenous Studies (NAIS) program and a Mainwaring Teaching Specialist at the Center for the Analysis of Archaeological Materials (CAAM). Her research focuses on zooarchaeology, ethnoarchaeology, and the archaeology of food, with a regional emphasis on South America, Central Asia, and North America. She holds a Ph.D. in Anthropology from the University of Michigan (1989).

Moore’s work explores prehistoric hunter-gatherer societies, pastoralism, and cultural ecology, particularly in high-altitude environments. She has conducted extensive fieldwork in Bolivia, Peru, and Turkmenistan, analyzing animal remains to reconstruct subsistence strategies and social practices. Her courses include ANTH1480 (Food and Fire), ANTH2267/5267 (Archaeological Science), and ANTH3215/5215 (Archaeology of Animals).

Her recent research examines ritual fires in Andean ceremonial sites, Early Holocene mobility patterns in the Andes, and inter-regional connections in prehistoric South America. She has co-authored studies on dietary isotopes, prehistoric fishing practices, and the socio-political dimensions of foodways in the Lake Titicaca Basin.
