Katherine Mooney serves as the James P. Jones Professor of History and Associate Chair for Graduate Studies at Florida State University. She maintains regular office hours, conducting meetings both in person on Tuesdays and via Zoom on Wednesdays.
Her research focuses on the cultural history of citizenship in the United States, with particular expertise in 19th Century America, slavery, sports history, and the U.S. South. Professor Mooney examines how citizenship is imagined and made into political and legal discourse, and how it manifests in people's daily lives.
Her scholarly publications reveal a consistent focus on African American experiences within American sporting culture and historical narratives. Her works demonstrate how sports, particularly horse racing, served as arenas where racial dynamics played out during critical periods of American history including slavery, Reconstruction, and the Jim Crow era.
