Katherine Keenan

Dr. Katherine Keenan is a Senior Lecturer in Demography/Population Geography at the University of St Andrews' School of Geography and Sustainable Development. She is also the Deputy Director (Training) of the Scottish Graduate School for Social Science, seconded 50% to the University of Edinburgh. Her academic roles include research and teaching in quantitative methods, demography, and health inequalities.

She holds visiting researcher positions at the Centre for Fertility and Health (Oslo), the International Max Planck Research School for Population, Health and Data Science (MPIDR-PHDS), and the Getulio Vargas Foundation (São Paulo, Brazil). She is an Associate Researcher at the Antimicrobial Resistance Institute of São Paulo.

Her research focuses on population health determinants, with emphasis on antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in East Africa and Brazil, multimorbidity trajectories in Scotland, and social dimensions of miscarriage. Methodologically, she employs quantitative and mixed-methods approaches. Current projects include leadership of an MRC-funded HATUA consortium and NIHR CARE project, as well as collaborations with the ERC-funded Social Determinants of Miscarriage study.

Teaching responsibilities include core quantitative methods for undergraduate geography/sustainable development programs and postgraduate training coordination. Her work aligns with UN Sustainable Development Goals addressing health equity and environmental sustainability.

Key grants include MRC, ESRC, and ERC funding, with projects exploring AMR interventions, generational health linkages, and data linkage for multimorbidity analysis. She has supervised six PhD students and contributes to interdisciplinary initiatives like the Connecting Generations Centre.
