Katherine Huala is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Art and Design Education at Pratt Institute's School of Art. She holds an M.F.A. in Photography from the University of Florida and a B.F.A. from The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art. Her work focuses on cultural displacement, identity, and institutional representations, with a teaching philosophy centered on self-expression, critical thinking, and visual literacy.
With 15 years of teaching experience, Huala has collaborated with NYC public schools and major museums, including The Metropolitan Museum of Art, MoMA, and the Brooklyn Museum, to develop cross-curricular educational initiatives. Notably, she contributed to revising the NYC Blueprint for Teaching and Learning in the Visual Arts and aligning it with New York State standards. She currently leads Culturally Responsive and Sustaining Education (CRSE) curriculum development for K-12 students through partnerships with Studio in a School, integrating art and activism to empower student storytelling and social change.
Huala’s professional development work includes designing programs for NYC visual arts educators and advocating for pedagogical frameworks that bridge art practice and social engagement.
