Katherine Henninger is the Russell B. Long Associate Professor of English at Louisiana State University (LSU), affiliated with the College of Humanities & Social Sciences. She holds a Ph.D. from The University of Texas at Austin. Her interdisciplinary work spans southern literature, women’s and gender studies, childhood studies, and visual culture, with a focus on photography’s intersection with literature.
Dr. Henninger’s research explores southern identity through literature, film, and cultural studies. Her monographs include *Ordering the Façade: Photography and Contemporary Southern Women’s Writing* (2007) and ongoing projects: *The Mandingo Effect: U.S. Slavery and Sexuality on Screen, 1968–2018* and *Made Strangely Beautiful: Southern Childhood in U.S. Literature and Film* (supported by a National Endowment for the Humanities fellowship). Her work examines how southern childhood is framed through racial and economic structures.
She teaches courses such as “Southern Childhood in U.S. Literature and Film” and “The South in Literature and Film,” blending literary analysis with visual culture. Awards include the 2008 Tiger Athletic Foundation Award for Undergraduate Teaching and a 2019 nomination for the Alumni Association Faculty Excellence Award.
Dr. Henninger serves on LSU’s Faculty Senate and the Executive Council of the Society for the Study of Southern Literature. She also contributes to interdisciplinary programs in Women’s, Gender and Sexuality Studies; Comparative Literature; and Screen Arts.
