Katherine E. Twombley, MD is a Professor with Tenure in the Department of Pediatrics at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC). She holds leadership roles as Chief of Pediatric Nephrology and Medical Director of the Pediatric Kidney Transplant Program and Acute Dialysis Units. Her research focuses on antibody-mediated rejection (AMR), chronic kidney disease, and pediatric kidney transplantation outcomes. Dr. Twombley is actively involved in clinical trials addressing pediatric nephrotic syndrome management and Focal Segmental Glomerulosclerosis (FSGS) treatment through innovative therapies like the Liposorber LA-15 System. She leads a biorepository initiative for pediatric nephrology research and co-develops mobile health tools for disease management.
Education: B.A. in Biology (College of Charleston, 1996), M.D. (MUSC, 2004), Pediatrics Residency (Miami Children’s Hospital, 2007), and Pediatric Nephrology Fellowship (University of Southwestern Medical Center, 2010).
Research emphasizes translational studies on immunological mechanisms in transplantation and metabolic bone disease. She chairs the Pediatric Community of Practice within the American Society of Transplantation and collaborates in multi-institutional projects across the Midwest Pediatric Nephrology Consortium.
Current projects include a mobile app trial for nephrotic syndrome management (UrApp) and biorepository development to advance diagnostic approaches for pediatric kidney diseases.
