Professor Katherine Denton is a leading academic in Physiology at Monash University's Monash Biomedicine Discovery Institute and the Victorian Heart Institute (VHI). Her research focuses on hypertension, kidney disease, and the renin-angiotensin system. She explores sex differences in cardiovascular and renal physiology, particularly during pregnancy and menopause, and investigates novel treatments like renal denervation for resistant hypertension.
- Affiliations: Monash Biomedicine Discovery Institute, Victorian Heart Institute (VHI)
- Key Projects:
- Sex-differences in cellular aging and cardiovascular disease (2022–2025)
- Targeting Prevention and Treatment of Hypertensive Cardiovascular Disease (2018–2022)
Research Interests: Professor Denton investigates the renin-angiotensin system's role in blood pressure regulation, pregnancy-related hypertension, and renal dysfunction. Her work combines micropuncture techniques to study glomeruli and renal nerve activity. She aims to improve early detection of kidney failure and understand long-term effects of renal denervation.
Awards:
- Dean's Award for Excellence in Education (2023)
- Vice-Chancellor's Excellence Award (2023)
Grants and Collaboration: Funded by NHMRC, her projects involve collaborations on non-invasive kidney imaging and antibiotic-antihypertensive interactions. She supervises research on developmental programming and renal physiology.
Labs/Teams: Active in interdisciplinary teams studying cardiovascular-renal metabolism, contributing to UN Sustainable Development Goals for health and well-being.
