Professor Katherine Schofield is Head of the Department of Music at King's College London, holding the position of Professor of South Asian Music and History. She specializes in the cultural history of music in Mughal India and the Indian Ocean region. Her academic credentials include training as a viola player at Queensland Conservatorium and a PhD in South Asian music history from SOAS University of London.
Professor Schofield's research examines music and listening practices in Mughal India (c.1570-1860), exploring intersections between sound, emotion, aesthetics, and power. Her current projects investigate music under imperial patronage, monsoon ragas, and courtesan traditions in historical contexts. She utilizes Persian, Urdu, and visual sources to reconstruct musical ephemera from elite and devotional cultures.
She has led major research initiatives including a €1.18M European Research Council project (MUSTECIO, 2011-2016) on music transformation during colonial transitions. Her book 'Music and Musicians in Late Mughal India' was a PROSE Award finalist. Since 2021, she has actively advocated for Afghan musicians displaced by Taliban rule.
