Katherine Bujold is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Chemistry & Chemical Biology at McMaster University, Faculty of Science. She specializes in oligonucleotide chemistry, DNA self-assembly, and drug delivery, focusing on synthesizing nucleic acid nanostructures with modified backbones for precision medicine applications.
Education:
- PhD in Chemistry (2011–2017), McGill University
- BSc in Honours Chemistry (2008–2011), McGill University
- Postdoctoral Fellow (2017–2020), Northwestern University
Research Interests: Her work integrates chemical biology, nanochemistry, and supramolecular chemistry to design nucleic acid-based delivery systems for therapeutics. Key areas include DNA nanostructures for drug encapsulation, stimuli-responsive colloidal crystals, and mercury-free oligonucleotide synthesis.
Recent Scholarly Activity: Recent publications focus on oligonucleotide building blocks for drug design (2025), polymer coatings for plasmonic interfaces (2025), and RNA therapeutics (2024). Her research emphasizes translating nucleic acid chemistry into clinical applications like targeted drug delivery.
Awards: Recognized as an Outstanding Reviewer for Chemical Science (2023).
Teaching & Grants: Teaches courses in organic chemistry and chemical biology. Co-recipient of $1.25M (2021) and $2.25M (2022) in New Frontiers in Research Fund grants for interdisciplinary projects.
Labs/Teams: Leads a research group developing nucleic acid-based therapies and collaborates with chemists and biologists on nanomedicine innovations.
