Professor Katharine Tyler holds the position of Professor of Social Anthropology at the University of Exeter within the Faculty of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences, serving as Senior Academic Lead for Sociology, Philosophy and Anthropology (SPSPA). She also previously held roles including Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Officer and Director of Doctoral Studies. Her research focuses on critical race studies, postcolonial theory, and the intersection of race, class, and nation in British contexts, with particular attention to Brexit, pandemic impacts, and genetic science's role in racial discourse. Tyler leads major ESRC-funded projects exploring media's role in Brexit-era Britain and collaborates on ERC-funded studies on sexism in political campaigning.
Her academic journey includes a PhD in Social Anthropology from the University of Manchester. Research highlights include ethnographic studies of rural whiteness, suburban ethnic dynamics, and mixed-race identities. She has authored/co-authored books like *Whiteness, Class and the Legacies of Empire* (2012) and contributes to interdisciplinary journals such as *The Sociological Review* and *Ethnos*. Tyler's work bridges anthropology, sociology, and political science, emphasizing reflexive methodologies and policy-relevant insights.
Current projects include the ERC-funded 'Twice as Hard, Half as Good?' examining gendered political inequalities.
