معرفی
Katharine Lewis is a Professor in the Department of Biology at Syracuse University, where she served as Department Chair (2020-2023) and directs the Integrated Learning Major in Neuroscience. She holds a PhD in Developmental Biology and Genetics from University College London and is Faculty Co-Director of Syracuse University's Women in Science and Engineering program.
Her research focuses on spinal cord interneuron specification, neuronal circuitry formation, zebrafish development, and environmental impacts on seizure susceptibility. The Lewis Lab uses genetic, cellular, and developmental approaches to study neural patterning and function, with applications in neurological disorder treatments.
Recent publications explore transcriptional regulation in zebrafish neural development, molecular mechanisms of spinal cord patterning, and evolutionary conservation of neural genes. These studies employ techniques including in situ hybridization, confocal microscopy, and RNA-Seq.
Awards include the James K. Duah-Agyeman Faculty Award and Meredith Professorship for Teaching Excellence. Research funding includes NSF and NIH grants supporting work on spinal cord neuron specification and environmental contaminant effects.
She mentors PhD and undergraduate researchers in the Lewis Lab, with students receiving Ruth Meyer Fellowships and LSAMP awards. Outreach includes zebrafish genetics workshops for K-12 students and leadership in the International Zebrafish Society.
