Katharine E. Burns is an Assistant Professor of Applied Linguistics, Second Language Acquisition, and Hispanic Studies at Carnegie Mellon University’s Dietrich College of Humanities and Social Sciences. She holds a Ph.D. in Second Language Acquisition & Teaching (SLAT) from the University of Arizona, alongside advanced degrees in Spanish and Liberal Studies from Marquette University and the University of Notre Dame.

Her interdisciplinary research focuses on language ideologies, bilingualism, and sociopolitical aspects of language learning. She examines how power dynamics, identity formation, and language policies shape L2 acquisition, particularly for endangered/minority languages and heritage learners. Key areas include critical discourse analysis, language policy, and the intersection of language and cultural identity.
Teaching responsibilities include graduate courses like Language Policy and Planning and undergraduate courses such as Bilingual and Bicultural Experiences in the USA. She also contributes to the Applied Multilingual Studies program.
Her work critiques dominant language ideologies in education, advocating for inclusive pedagogies that value multilingualism and sociocultural contexts. Research spans Spanish, French, Haitian Kreyòl, and other marginalized languages.
