Katharine Capshaw is a Professor of English at the University of Connecticut, specializing in children’s literature, African American studies, and urban cultural history. Her research bridges literary analysis with social justice themes, particularly focusing on how marginalized communities use storytelling to address systemic issues like racism and poverty. She has authored transformative works such as Civil Rights Childhood (2014) and Children’s Literature of the Harlem Renaissance (2004), both award-winning studies of literature’s role in cultural liberation.
Her work emphasizes interdisciplinary approaches, linking visual culture, drama, and historical context.
