Katharina Wrohlich is a Professor of Public Finance, Gender, and Family Economics at the University of Potsdam and Head of the Gender Economics Research Group at the German Institute for Economic Research (DIW Berlin). She holds a PhD from the Free University of Berlin (2007) and prior academic training at the University of Vienna and Georgetown University. Her research focuses on evaluating labor market, family, and tax policies affecting women’s employment and wages, as well as analyzing gender gaps in earnings and leadership roles. She has held roles including Deputy Head of the Public Economics Department at DIW Berlin (2012–2016) and has contributed to numerous policy analyses and reforms.
Key research areas include parental leave policies, gender pay gaps, and the impact of tax reforms on family structures. She serves on the scientific advisory boards of the Institute for Employment Research (IAB) and the Austrian Institute of Economic Research (WIFO). Her work spans empirical studies on childcare subsidies, peer effects in parental leave decisions, and long-term earnings consequences of policy changes.
Recent projects address gender disparities in executive roles, reforming family policies during the pandemic, and analyzing age-related pay gaps. She actively engages in policy discussions, emphasizing equitable care work distribution and reforming tax systems to reduce gender inequalities.
