Katharina Uhde serves as Assistant Professor of Music at Valparaiso University, where she teaches violin and viola. She is an internationally recognized violinist and musicologist with a distinguished performance career spanning orchestral soloist, chamber musician, and scholarly researcher.
She earned her DMA from the University of Michigan and a PhD in Musicology from Duke University, supported by a Fulbright grant during doctoral studies. Her educational background underpins both her performance expertise and academic rigor.
Professor Uhde's research centers on 19th-century music, particularly Joseph Joachim's legacy. Her seminal book The Music of Joseph Joachim (Boydell & Brewer, 2018) established her authority, and she currently collaborates with R. Larry Todd on a monograph about musical ciphers. As a performer, she specializes in rediscovered Joachim repertoire and chamber music, having premiered works like the Fantasies on Hungarian and Irish Themes.
Her accolades include:
- Fulbright Fellowship
- First prizes in international competitions (Czech Republic and Germany)
- 2004 Concerto Competition of the University of Michigan
Professor Uhde secures significant research funding, including a Fritz Thyssen Foundation grant for the bilingual conference Joseph Joachim: Identitäten/Identities and Valparaiso University support for her CD project with the Polish Radio Orchestra Warsaw. She maintains an intense performance schedule of approximately 30 concerts and lecture recitals annually, blending scholarly presentation with virtuosic execution across global venues.
