Katharina Kullmann

Katharina Kullmann is a Scientific Associate at the University of Applied Sciences Erfurt within the Department of Urban and Spatial Planning, Faculty of Architecture and Urban Planning. She concurrently pursues a cooperative doctorate between the University of Applied Sciences Erfurt and the University of Münster since March 2018, focusing on EU structural funding's impact on local democracy in Athens and Leipzig.

Her research centers on urban governance, local democracy, and project organization. She investigates municipal steering processes, local networks, and administration-politics-civil society dynamics. Additional focus areas include political system qualification, urban value genesis, transnational network influences on local governance, and urban diversity-social cohesion relationships in European contexts.

Kullmann's publications demonstrate consistent empirical analysis of urban governance and diversity through Leipzig and Athens case studies. Her work examines EU structural funds' democratic impacts and city-level management of social heterogeneity, employing qualitative methodologies to advance multi-level governance understanding in European urban policy.

She actively contributes to research initiatives including the AIM project (2021-present) on institutional handling of EU citizen mobility, a societal integration study (2020-2021) addressing right-wing radicalization in Eastern German towns, and the DIVERCITIES project (2013-2017) on urban diversity. Her work involves extensive field research and international collaboration.

Kullmann operates within the Research Collective Periphery and Center at her institution and maintains collaborative ties with the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ) in Leipzig and the National Centre for Social Research in Athens, reflecting her embeddedness in transnational urban research networks.
