Dr. Kate Winter is a Senior Lecturer in Extreme Environments within the Department of Geography and Environmental Sciences at Northumbria University. Her research focuses on glaciology, using ice-penetrating radar and remote sensing to study subglacial environments, ice dynamics in Antarctica, and sediment transport mechanisms. She investigates how topography influences ice flow and integrates geophysical data to understand long-term ice sheet stability.
Her work emphasizes interdisciplinary approaches, combining field-based studies with computational modeling. Notable areas of interest include the impact of climate change on subglacial lakes, the role of oil sands in glacial dynamics, and the reconstruction of past ice sheet configurations through radar stratigraphy. She collaborates with the NUSTEM team to develop science communication initiatives aimed at public engagement.
Dr. Winter teaches undergraduate modules on glaciology, climate science, and geology, supervising projects at all academic levels. Her research has been published in high-impact journals, with a focus on Antarctic and Greenland ice sheet dynamics, subglacial processes, and paleoclimatic reconstructions. Current projects include assessing drilling sites for subglacial bedrock analysis and evaluating the potential of 'old ice' cores in East Antarctica for climate records.
Her outreach efforts bridge academic research with public understanding, emphasizing the societal relevance of glacial science in addressing climate change challenges.
