Professor Kate Pahl is a Professor of Arts and Literacy at Manchester Metropolitan University. Her research focuses on literacy practices, co-production methodologies, and arts-based approaches in communities. She leads major interdisciplinary grants, including the NERC-funded 'Voices of the Future' project exploring youth engagement with treescapes. She has held roles on UKRI panels and reviews grants for international funding bodies. Her work emphasizes collaborative, ethical research with marginalized groups, particularly young people and multilingual communities.
Education: PhD in Social Anthropology from King’s College London (2004), BA in English from the University of Cambridge. Prior to academia, she worked as an outreach literacy worker and editor.
Research Interests
Professor Pahl’s expertise spans co-production ethics, multilingualism, environmental education, and creative methodologies. She advocates for methodologies that center community voices and bridge academic and everyday knowledge.
Grants & Leadership
PI of 10 UKRI grants, including a £2M NERC grant (2021-2024). She chairs panels for AHRC and advises DEFRA/DCLG on policy. Her work has informed UKRI’s 'Trust' programme and GCRF initiatives.
Advising & Teaching
Supervises doctoral students in literacy, co-production, and environmental education. Teaches modules on global challenges, arts methodologies, and interdisciplinary research.
