Kate McIntyre is an Assistant Professor of Creative Writing at Worcester Polytechnic Institute's Humanities & Arts school. She holds a PhD from the University of Missouri (2013), an MFA from Oregon State University (2006), and a BA from Harvard University (2004). Her research focuses on creative writing, narrative theory, and gothic literature, with a particular interest in genre intersections and rural settings.
Her debut short story collection Mad Prairie (2021), winner of the Flannery O'Connor Award, explores themes of isolation, environmental toxicity, and gothic horror in the Midwest. She co-edits the speculative flash journal hex literary, and her work has appeared in venues like Cincinnati Review, Indiana Review, and Missouri Review.
Notable awards include the PEN/Robert W. Bingham Prize Long List, Kansas Notable Book designation, and Pushcart Prize mentions. Her writing blends surrealism with social critique, often examining family dynamics, political corruption, and the human body's limits.
Dr. McIntyre has held residencies at Playa, Kimmel Harding Nelson, and Hewnoaks. She actively engages in academic and literary communities through readings, panels, and editorial work, advocating for innovative narrative forms and interdisciplinary collaborations.
