Kate Lingley is an Associate Professor of Art History in the Art and Art History department at the University of Hawai’i at Mānoa. Her research focuses on the social history of Buddhist art in medieval China, particularly examining issues of identity construction through dress, ethnicity, and patronage along the Silk Road. She holds a Ph.D. in Art History from the University of Chicago (2004) and has authored/co-edited works on topics ranging from early medieval Buddhist sculpture to the role of women in Buddhist votive practices.
Her academic contributions include co-editing Bloomsbury Cultural History of Asian Art and serving as early China editor for the Oxford Asian Art Online. Current projects include a monograph on Buddhist women's votive monuments and an edited volume on women's roles in early Buddhism across Asia. She teaches courses on Chinese art from Neolithic times to the present, as well as European medieval art.
