Kate Hill is a Lecturer and head of Ceramics at the School of Art & Design within the College of Arts and Social Sciences at the Australian National University (ANU). Her expanded ceramic practice critically examines clay soil's entanglements with cultural and material politics through studio-based and situated community projects.
Her academic qualifications include:
- PhD in Fine Art, Monash University (awarded December 2024)
- Master of Community Cultural Development, University of Melbourne (awarded March 2015)
- Bachelor of Fine Art, RMIT University (awarded December 2010)
Hill's research investigates settler colonial dynamics in Australian ceramics, challenging concepts like 'wild' clay through her 'pit to product' framework. She integrates raw/low-fired clay processes with gardening, walking, and audiovisual media to develop cyclical, porous, and collective engagements with clay environments. Her work bridges environmental art, Indigenous studies, and decolonial practice, emphasizing material ethics and community reciprocity.
Her publications analyze artist residencies as sites for reimagining social engagement, highlighting how fieldwork and collaborative practices transform audience development and cultural diplomacy. These works demonstrate consistent focus on community-centered art methodologies and environmental consciousness across her scholarly output.
Hill actively contributes to environmental initiatives:
- Board member, Plumwood Mountain committee (2025–present)
- Member, Climate Aware Creative Practice inter-university working group (2024–present)
- Former board member, Friends of Merri Creek (2019–2024)
